Calamari Productions begins work on first feature documentary film
— April 13, 2009
This month filming begins in Miami, Florida for what Karen Grau calls the
culmination of her 12 years filming with kids caught in child welfare and
juvenile justice systems. "We've now reached beyond the Heartland of
America and gained official legal access to the largest juvenile justice
jurisdictions in the country. What we're embarking on goes coast-to-coast.
I think I speak for our entire crew when I say it is work of a lifetime."
Grau and her crew will be filming in several jurisdictions across the
country, including Miami and Los Angeles. Just as An Inconvenient Truth
helped propel climate change to the forefront of dialogue in schools, senate
houses, and at the dinner table, the yet-to-be-titled documentary will bring
juvenile issues to light for the millions of Americans who might not readily
see them in their day-to-day environments.
"From the outset my driving credo has been that you cannot improve a system
you cannot see," Grau says. "And these issues affect all of us, from the
health of our immediate communities to the allocation of our tax dollars."
Hailed as "the most socially conscious film of the decade" by
representatives close to the project, Grau expects a late, 2010 release.
